Concord Art Association (CAA) announces guest artist – Pablo Villacana Lara – June 8th, 2010
Pablo Villacana Lara I was born in a small village thirty miles south of the California/Mexico border. I came to the United States when I was five to receive medical attention needed due to contracting polio when I was two years old. I had always intended to go back to Mexico, but by the time the medical attention was over, I had been in school several years so I decided to stay and finish my schooling. I received my Bachelors of Fine Arts from St. Mary's College in Moraga, California, then went on to receive my Masters of Fine Arts in drawing with distinction at California College of the Arts in Oakland. Though I was raised in both Mexican and American cultures, most of my paintings reflect my Mexican Native heritage. Through bold color, dramatic lighting, handmade objects such as pottery, baskets, blankets, musical instruments, cultural objects, and portraits of family members and traditional people, I create paintings that speak of the heart of my people and the culture that many are trying to preserve. I try to evoke a sense of ancient history and tradition as well as weave symbols of stories passed down orally from generation to generation.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
Walnut Creek, CA, May 4, 2010 – The first annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for Contra Costa County, will be held on June 19th at Heather Farm Park in Walnut Creek. Everyone is invited to participate. “We are so excited to bring this nationally acclaimed walk to our community, said volunteer Event Chair Lisa Demarest. There is so much we can do for our neighbors, families, and companies through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Anyone can get involved and help our community fight back against breast cancer. Just give us a call and we will help you start a team.” The non-competitive walk will be held on Saturday, June 19th at Heather Farm Park. Teams of walkers will complete a 5K non-competitive course and take part in activities before/after the walk.” “The American Cancer Society uses the funds raised through Making Strides to fund research leading to the discovery of lifesaving treatments, advocate for all women to have access to mammograms and treatments – regardless of income – and to provide free programs and services that improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families,” said leadership volunteer, Sandy Goldberg. Since 1993, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has been the American Cancer Society’s rallying cry to raise awareness and money to fight breast cancer. In that time, 6 million walkers have raised more than $400 million through Making Strides. The American Cancer Society has awarded approximately $388.4 million to breast cancer research since 1971.
